OpenAI launched dots, an always-on AI personal assistant that connects to local tools, email, and calendars.
Built for ChatGPT Pro subscribers starting at $100 a month, dots evolved from earlier agentic coding tools and features proactive research capabilities alongside computer resource access.
The new tool was unveiled in late September during the company’s developer event. According to OpenAI executives, the idea behind dots emerged from programming tools the company released earlier in the year. The assistant’s name is based on the shape of the company’s logo, and in interviews, it has jokingly mentioned that the eponymous website belongs to Elon Musk.
Dots is available on OpenAI's desktop and mobile apps, but is limited to subscribers who pay at least $100 per month. The assistant connects to a user's calendar, email, computer, and other apps.
How the new assistant works
Unlike traditional programs where the user asks for something specific, dots works proactively. It periodically analyzes what it knows about the user and the available files to suggest useful actions. Initially, the company chose very conservative settings for what the assistant is allowed to do, resulting in it frequently asking for the user's permission.
Data protection and privacy settings
OpenAI says the assistant has the same privacy settings as the rest of the platform, allowing users to opt out of having their data used to improve systems and control access to computer resources.

However, the app doesn't yet have very detailed privacy settings and requires broad access, and doesn't offer a limited read option for online storage. The company is also talking to payment providers so that digital assistants can make purchases through partnerships in the future.
