Oura adds fatigue and oxygen measurements to its smart rings

Oura has added Cardio Effort and VO₂ max tracking to its Gen3 and newer smart rings, introducing new biometric metrics that evaluate workout intensity, duration, and aerobic fitness capacity using passive GPS and heart rate data.

How Cardio Effort measurement works

The first metric, Cardio Effort, shows how much a workout strains the cardiovascular system. It takes into account both intensity and duration, so a short but intense workout can have similar results to a longer, more relaxed one.

The weekly total effort is classified into categories such as light, satisfactory, maintenance, improvement or exceed. The system is based on the increase in heart rate in relation to each user's personal resting heart rate for greater accuracy.

The VO₂ max estimate

The second addition is a VO₂ max measurement, which shows how effectively the heart, lungs, and muscles work together to transport and use oxygen during exercise. The ring estimates this value passively through activities using GPS.

After completing five activities, users receive an initial rating. In the My Health Heart Hub, they can view their rating, fitness category, and history. Categories include low, fair, high, or top.

Availability

Both new features are rolling out to Oura Ring Gen3 and newer devices. VO₂ max measurement is initially available through Oura Labs, the company’s dedicated platform for testing features.
