PCMag has launched a comprehensive benchmarking suite for evaluating local AI performance on consumer hardware.
The framework establishes three distinct hardware tiers based on memory and processing power, using tools like MLPerf Client and LM Studio to measure generation speed and response latency.
As computers now have dedicated components to perform such functions without an internet connection, traditional evaluation methods are no longer sufficient. To properly assess the real performance of devices, the tests are divided into three different categories depending on their hardware and memory.
The three categories of computers
The first category concerns everyday computers with basic equipment, which have at least 16 gigabytes of memory.
The second category includes more powerful systems and gaming laptops, which have at least 32 gigabytes of memory and a dedicated graphics card.

The third category concerns advanced machines, which have at least 96 gigabytes of integrated memory for very large models.
How are measurements made?
Specialized tools, such as MLPerf Client and LM Studio, are used for testing. The main measurements are the time to first response of the computer and the speed of data production per second.
The new testing system was introduced by Brian Westover on November 4, 2026.
