SpaceX and Qualcomm have partnered to deploy Dragonwing radio and processing units across tens of thousands of cell sites starting in 2027.
The infrastructure combines terrestrial connectivity with Starlink satellite backhaul using 2GHz spectrum.
Under the agreement, Qualcomm will supply Dragonwing QRU100 and QDU100 radio and processing units. Installation of this equipment in tens of thousands of mobile phone antennas is expected to begin in 2027. This is the first time that this equipment has been deployed in the United States and is the largest mobile phone deal Qualcomm has made to date.
How will the new network work?
The equipment will utilize a frequency spectrum that SpaceX acquired from EchoStar in a September 2025 agreement. The service the company is preparing combines terrestrial antennas with satellite coverage.
To transmit data, the ground antennas will rely on the Starlink network. At the same time, SpaceX has less terrestrial spectrum compared to the country's large, traditional mobile providers.
