Russian chipmakers demonstrated homegrown RISC-V and Arm silicon at the Microelectronics 26 forum in Sochi.
Highlights included hardware testing via retro games, such as running an NES clone on a Baikal processor, reflecting regional semiconductor development efforts amid ongoing sanctions.
The presentation in Sochi
The demonstration took place at the Microelectronics 26 forum, which was hosted in the city of Sochi. As part of the event, the creators used, among other things, a computer based on the Baikal processor, which ran older generation games.
The state of technology in the country
Due to international sanctions and geopolitical developments, access to foreign technology in Russia has been significantly limited. As a result, the country is trying to rely on its own processor designs, including various architectures.
There was even a government mandate in the past to create a local high-performance gaming console. However, the efforts encountered difficulties and failed to compete with established commercial systems on the global market, such as the PlayStation or Xbox.
