Satellite communication on Pixel 9 is free for another year

Google extends free Satellite SOS access on Pixel 9 devices for an additional year.

The feature, which leverages Skylo's satellite network to connect users in cellular dead zones, was originally slated for a two-year free window following its August 2024 launch.

The company introduced the feature in August 2024, initially stating that it would remain free for the first two years after the device was activated. Although the official support page still lists the original two-year time limit, a Google spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday that it is being extended for another year at no additional charge.

Apple has followed a similar tactic in the past, repeatedly extending the free period of its own satellite service for iPhone users. In the case of Pixel devices, Google uses satellites from the company Skylo. Skylo is moving to Globalstar satellites to offer support to more devices. It is noted that Amazon announced the acquisition of Globalstar earlier this year to expand into the satellite communication market for mobile phones.
