Apple's upcoming iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro lineup introduces the 2nm A20 Pro processor featuring a wafer-level multichip module placing DRAM next to the CPU.
The foldable iPhone Duo also features a flexible graphite pipe routed through the hinge for thermal management.
How cooling works on the foldable iPhone
To more effectively dissipate heat from the two halves of the phone, Apple ran a special, flexible graphite tube through the device's hinge to transfer heat from one part to the other. According to Banafsheh Barabadi, senior thermal product designer at the company, the overall approach also includes direct chip contact, metal-on-foam material, an enlarged cooling chamber, and a copper display plate with nanotubes and a layer of highly conductive graphite.
The new A20 Pro processor
The iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo models feature the new A20 Pro processor, which is built on 2-nanometer technology. Dan Murray is Apple's vice president of silicon engineering.
The processor features two high-performance cores, four energy-efficient cores, seven graphics cores, and 32 cores for AI functions. It also uses an architecture where the memory is next to the processor, rather than directly above it. The iPhone Duo version of the chip also includes a second display engine and support for an under-display FaceTime camera.
New cooling chambers in Pro models
In addition to the foldable model, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max feature a cooling chamber with a surface area three times larger than the previous generation, helping to manage the temperature of the powerful new features.
