Waymo announced it will end its ride-hailing exclusivity agreement with Uber in Austin and Atlanta beginning in January 2028, shifting to direct ride booking via its own smartphone app while Uber continues hosting vehicles under mutual agreement.
Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mavacana said in a report published Wednesday that the initial partnership with Uber was made because the platform had the necessary scale, but she described the passenger experience as uncertain, as users never knew whether they would be picked up by an autonomous vehicle or a driverless car.
For its part, Uber confirmed that it intends to continue hosting Waymo's autonomous vehicles on its app for as long as the two companies agree. Uber also clarified that it was Waymo's idea not to add an option to its app for exclusive self-driving vehicle reservations.
