Waymo is expanding to Canada, targeting a 2028 launch for its autonomous taxi service in Toronto.
Initial phases include street mapping and testing a small fleet of Jaguar I-Pace vehicles with safety drivers, focusing on sensor performance and navigation through harsh winter weather.
The company, which is owned by Alphabet, announced that it plans to launch its service in Toronto in 2028. According to the plans, preparations are starting immediately with mapping the city's streets.
How will the first steps be taken?
The mapping process will initially be carried out with drivers behind the wheel of vehicles. The aim is to record the roads and traffic in the area.
The trials will begin with a small fleet of Jaguar I-Pace vehicles. Waymo is partnering with local Toronto-based Element Fleet Management to manage the fleet. When the service is ready, passengers will be able to book rides through Waymo’s dedicated app.

The winter challenge
Toronto brings to the fore a significant challenge: the harsh winter weather conditions, such as snow, ice and reduced visibility.
Waymo has a system that can clear snow from sensors and adjust driving based on road conditions.
The company received approval for its plans through Ontario's autonomous vehicle pilot testing program.
