An analysis of automated calling systems highlights how silent phone interactions are used to verify active phone numbers, map user availability, and potentially harvest voice data for downstream fraud applications, alongside common technical glitches.

In the most innocent cases, silence is due to technical malfunctions, such as an unintentionally muted microphone, the connection of the mobile phone to a headset, or problems with the mobile network. Meanwhile, legitimate call centers use automated systems that dial numbers faster than the available representatives can handle, creating a short delay until someone is connected.

However, silent calls are also often used by sophisticated people. Automated systems or artificial intelligence tools check whether a number is active and record when users answer. Even a brief first word on the phone is enough to reveal valuable information, such as the user's accent, age, gender and habits. This data is used to create targeted phishing attacks or collect voice samples to create convincing fake audio copies.

To limit the risks, it is advisable not to answer calls with hidden numbers or from strangers, never call back unknown numbers and wait for the caller to speak first. If there is silence, end the call immediately. At the same time, you can block suspicious numbers through your mobile phone settings and limit the disclosure of your main number by using an alternative number for orders and online registrations.
