Canadian software engineer and YouTuber Anthony Sistilli built an automatic license plate recognition camera to track police vehicles, highlighting privacy concerns surrounding expanding mass surveillance networks.
This project reflects concerns around the increasing use of surveillance networks by law enforcement.
The camera network and the police visit
Flock Safety operates a national surveillance network of more than 120.000 cameras in 49 states, which record billions of vehicle scans each month.
On September 20, two police officers went to Sistilli's home to ask him questions about the device and his reasons for making it. He spoke about the visit in a video he uploaded to his YouTube channel on October 7.
