RAG From an Engineering Perspective
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is the technique that lets a chatbot answer questions about your specific product, policies, and knowledge base without retraining the underlying LLM. It is the single most important pattern for keeping bot answers factual, current, and brand-safe.
Why RAG (and not fine-tuning)
● Knowledge changes daily (pricing, policies, product specs). Fine-tuning every change is expensive and slow.
● RAG gives you citations — you can show the user exactly where an answer came from.
● RAG keeps sensitive data out of model weights; you can revoke a document and the bot stops using it on the next query.
● It dramatically reduces hallucinations because the model is generating grounded in retrieved text rather than recalling from memory.
Indexing Pipeline (offline)
This runs continuously in the background as your knowledge changes:
- Ingest sources: help center articles, product docs, policy PDFs, past resolved tickets, internal wikis.
- Clean and normalize: strip boilerplate, redact PII, preserve structure (headings, lists, tables).
- Chunk: split documents into semantically coherent chunks (typically 200–800 tokens) with overlap so context is not cut mid-thought.
- Embed: pass each chunk through an embedding model to produce a vector.

- Citation and verification: the response includes source links; an optional verifier step checks that claims in the answer are actually supported by the retrieved chunks.
