I checked all 12 Reddit subreddits for freelance gigs. Only 3 are usable.

I spent a few weeks going through every subreddit people mention when the topic of finding freelance work from overseas comes up. Twelve of them. I pulled subscriber counts and rules through Reddit's own API, and activity numbers from the official RSS feeds, so the numbers below are traceable rather than remembered.

Here is what I found, and what I would tell anyone thinking about Reddit as a client source.

Three subreddits actually work

r/forhire — 684,000 subscribers, about 33 new posts a day. The hard rule: no gigs priced below $15/hour. It protects you from a race to the bottom, and it also caps the low end.

r/DesignJobs — 202,000 subscribers, design work. The threshold is written explicitly: the account must be older than 60 days and have more than 200 karma. Floor price is $20/hour.

r/gameDevClassifieds — 158,000 subscribers, game outsourcing. Be careful: rev-share projects, free work, AI art and personal commissions are all banned. If you are a solo artist or writer, this one is mostly closed to you.

The ones that are dead ends

r/freelance bans hiring and self-promotion outright, and the penalty is permanent ban. r/WorkOnline explicitly forbids "for hire" posts. r/beermoney is a survey site directory, not a job board. r/jobbit is effectively abandoned: the newest 100 posts run from November 2025 to 31 August 2026, and nothing after that.

The karma wall nobody publishes

Both r/forhire and r/slavelabour state in their rules that the karma threshold is not public and will not be answered. What I could measure elsewhere: r/hiring wants 25 comment karma, r/DoneDirtCheap wants 20, r/b2bforhire wants a two-month-old account, r/INAT wants a new account to be at least a week old.

The practical consequence: a new account that posts gets silently removed. No error, no explanation. If you are starting from zero, the first job is not writing a portfolio, it is spending a couple of weeks commenting.

Money never touches the platform

No escrow, no guarantee, no dispute process. Payment happens off-platform: PayPal, gift cards, Bitcoin. The only line in the rules about it suggests you consider using an escrow service. If something goes wrong, the moderators are explicit that they will not get involved.

The trap worth knowing

When your post is auto-removed, do not message the moderators to ask why or to request an exception. The r/forhire rules state that contacting the moderators for an exception results in a ban. Another large subreddit puts it as: no exceptions will be made for any reason, ever. The correct move is to fix the post and submit again.

So is it worth it

For someone outside the US who wants paying clients without a platform taking a cut, Reddit is one of the few places where the rulebook is public and the demand is real. It is also gated by account history, moderated by automations that do not explain themselves, and it will not hold your money.

Treat the first month as an investment in account reputation, not in finding work.
