Chiang Mai's lantern nights shut the airport after 7 PM

Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on Tuesday, November 24, and so does Loy Krathong. In Chiang Mai that's the first of two Yi Peng lantern nights, so plenty of Delhi and Bengaluru tech workers are eyeing a Thailand trip around the holiday.

The flight that looks fine. Chiang Mai airport has asked airlines not to fly from 7 PM to 1 AM on November 24 and 25, and from 10 AM to noon on the 24th, to keep lanterns away from aircraft. By October 30, airlines had cancelled 108 flights and retimed 80 between November 21 and 28. The evening flight you saw last month may have moved, and nothing flies home on Tuesday night. Lanterns plus your desk on time usually means a Wednesday daytime flight and one more leave day.

Where the lanterns actually go up. Sky lanterns are banned in the city area. The big releases are private, ticketed events outside town with their own prices and refund terms. Pick one that includes the ride back to town, because late taxis out there are scarce. An old city hotel suits the krathong floats, not the sky lanterns.

The questions worth asking first. Does my flight land and leave inside the airport's open hours? Has the airline already retimed it? Which night is my lantern event, how far is it from my hotel, and what happens to the ticket if my flight moves?

Where SearchSpot fits. Tell it your dates, city and who's coming. It asks follow-ups like these first, then checks the flight, the stay and the event as one trip, with a human team behind the AI. It puts you before commissions, so its job is the best value for your whole trip, wherever and whenever it's found.

Before you lock a Chiang Mai fare, ask SearchSpot whether it still works on lantern night.
