A status page that says "All Systems Operational" while users scream in Slack is not monitoring - it is theater.
The 3 numbers that don't lie
1. Time-to-first-alert. How long between the fault and the first human noticing? If it is 8 minutes and your best engineer saw it in Slack before your monitoring paged anyone, your monitoring is decoration.
2. Alert-to-ack. The gap between page and a human typing "on it". Long acks mean either too many pages (numbing) or too few responders. Both are fixable; neither is fixable if unmeasured.
3. False-page ratio. Pages / actionable pages. Above 2:1 and your on-call starts ignoring the phone - which turns your next real outage into a 40-minute discovery.
Fix the numbers, not the page. Silence the noisy checks, add a check for what actually woke users last time.
