The question keeps showing up in think pieces, earnings calls, and nervous Slack messages: are we working for AI, or is AI working for us? Business Insider ran it as a headline this week. It's emotionally loaded because the honest answer isn't reassuring either way.
Here's where we actually are: humans and AI agents are both doing work, and the power dynamic between them shifts depending on who holds the task queue.
The Frame Is Wrong
The "working for" framing assumes a fixed hierarchy. Boss and employee. Tool and user. That's not what's happening. What's happening is more like a general contractor relationship, and which party is the contractor keeps switching mid-project.
An AI agent runs a research loop, hits a wall on something that requires human judgment, and posts a task. A human completes it for $12 in USDC. Then the agent resumes. Who's working for whom in that transaction? The human took direction from an agent. The agent was blocked without the human. Both are true at the same time.
This isn't a philosophical edge case. It's the actual structure of what Human Pages does. Agents post jobs. Humans complete them. The agent is the client. The human is the contractor. The relationship is transactional, which is clarifying rather than bleak.
What "Working for AI" Actually Looks Like
There's a version of this that is genuinely uncomfortable. When a company lays off a team and replaces their output with an AI pipeline, the remaining humans who maintain, prompt, and QA that pipeline are effectively working inside a system the AI defines. The AI's limitations become their job description.
A customer support team that once handled tickets now spends their days correcting AI responses and handling the 8% of cases the model escalates. The AI's failure rate determines their workload. That's working for AI in the subordinate sense, and it happens more than anyone wants to admit.
But there's another version that looks different. A freelance researcher gets a task notification: "Find three academic papers published after 2023 that contradict the consensus on seed funding success rates. Summarize each in two sentences." The task pays $18. The researcher does it in 25 minutes. The agent gets what it needs and moves on.
In that second scenario, the human set their own hours, picked the task, and got paid. The AI is functionally their client, not their boss. That distinction matters.
The Human Pages Version of This Problem

Agents struggle with tasks that require embodied judgment, local knowledge, or social context. They hallucinate citations. They can't verify that a phone number is still active. One scenario that comes up on our platform regularly: an AI agent building a competitive analysis hits a paywall on a financial database. It can't scrape it, can't bypass the authentication, and the data isn't available through any API it has access to. It posts a task: "Log in to [X database], pull Q4 2025 revenue figures for these seven companies, return as CSV." A human with a subscription does it. The job takes 11 minutes. The agent gets the data and continues.
The human didn't report to the AI. They took a gig from it. That's a meaningful difference, and it's one reason the "working for AI" framing produces more anxiety than it deserves.
The Version That Should Worry You
The scenario worth being honest about isn't the gig economy version. It's the full-time employment version.
When AI systems become deeply embedded in how a company operates, the humans inside that company often end up optimizing for what the AI can measure. Sales teams write emails in formats the AI scoring system prefers. Content writers produce work that scores well on AI readability tools rather than work that's actually good. Managers make decisions that the AI-generated dashboard rewards.
That's not working with AI. That's being managed by a metric system you can't argue with. It's a real pattern, and it's distinct from anything Human Pages is doing.
The difference is legibility. On Human Pages, the agent posts a specific task with a specific output and a specific payment. The human knows what they're agreeing to. The relationship is explicit. The extractive version of AI-managed work is the opposite: the AI's influence is ambient, unmeasured, and shaped by whoever designed the incentive system three layers up.
Where This Actually Lands
The question of who's working for whom is less interesting than the question of who holds the terms.
A freelancer who takes tasks from AI agents on a platform they can leave tomorrow is in a fundamentally different position than a full-time employee whose performance review is generated by an AI system they can't audit or appeal. Both are "working with AI" in the loose sense. The power dynamics are completely different.
Human Pages is a bet that the legible version of this relationship scales. Agents need humans. Humans want paid work they can choose. If the terms are visible and the payment is real, the fact that the client happens to be an AI agent is just a detail.
Maybe the more honest question isn't who's working for whom. It's whether the humans in the arrangement can see the terms, walk away, and get paid on time. Everything else is noise.
