Does Converting Images Reduce Quality?

Honest answer: it depends on the direction.

• PNG → JPG or WebP — the output is compressed, so some invisible detail is discarded. At normal viewing sizes you won't notice, but keep the original PNG if you plan to edit again.
• JPG → WebP — usually a win: WebP compresses more efficiently, so you get a smaller file at equal quality.
• JPG → PNG — the file gets bigger but the quality doesn't improve. Conversion can't restore data that lossy compression already threw away. Don't convert hoping for an "upgrade" — it only goes one way.
• Converting a lossy file repeatedly — JPG → JPG → JPG degrades a little each time. Convert from the highest-quality source you have, not from a file that's already been converted three times.

Transparency warning: converting PNG to JPG kills transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas become a solid background (usually white). If the logo needs to stay transparent, stick with PNG or WebP.
