From Beauty to Tech

From Waxing to Websites: My Journey Into Tech

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d go from perfecting eyebrows to debugging code, I probably would have laughed and asked if you needed an emergency brow touch-up. But here I am, trading wax pots for websites and lash extensions for lines of code.

For over a decade, I worked as an esthetician, focusing on full-body waxing, eyelash extensions, and micro-shading eyebrows. My days were spent helping people look and feel their best. But somewhere along the way, I realized I wanted to do something different—something that could challenge me creatively, intellectually, and financially. A big push came from the consistent back pains I experienced while waxing and doing lashes, which made me rethink the long-term sustainability of my career. I wanted to build something lasting for myself and my daughters, and that’s what led me to tech.

Diving Into Tech: Where It All Started

My first steps into tech were with HTML and CSS, the dynamic duo of website building. I’d spend hours teaching myself how to create layouts, tweak colors, and make designs pop. Once I felt comfortable there, I branched out into JavaScript and C++. Building websites and apps became my new passion—a space where I could see my ideas come to life.

I’ll admit, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. At first, I’d stare at the screen like it was written in a secret alien language. And don’t get me started on the debugging phase. Turns out, my first programming project wasn’t a website; it was troubleshooting my own mistakes. But with persistence (and lots of Google searches), I’ve built projects that make me proud.

Standing at the Crossroads

Now, I find myself at an exciting yet slightly intimidating crossroads. I’m currently learning about programming and software development while dipping my toes into cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is fascinating—it feels like a mix of detective work and digital heroism. Who wouldn’t want to learn how to outsmart hackers and keep data safe? On the other hand, programming is where I feel most at home, crafting apps and websites that solve problems or bring joy.

While I’m still getting my footing in cybersecurity, programming feels like an old friend that keeps pushing me to grow. I’m not sure which path I’ll choose, but I’m grateful for the chance to explore both and see where they lead.

The Journey So Far

Making this career change hasn’t been easy. I had to downsize my life significantly just to afford to work part-time and have enough time to attend school full-time. It’s been a humbling experience, but one that I know is worth the sacrifice. Each step forward brings me closer to building the future I want for myself and my daughters.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far? Patience and persistence are everything. Whether it’s coding or life, mistakes are inevitable, but each one teaches you something new. Also, tech is surprisingly like my old job: it’s all about precision, creativity, and keeping calm when things get messy.

What’s Next?

So here I am, standing at this crossroads with a lot of learning ahead and even more ambition to keep going. I’m not sure where this road will take me—maybe I’ll be coding the next viral app, or maybe I’ll be stopping a cybersecurity threat in its tracks. Either way, I’m excited for what’s to come.

To anyone considering a career change, my advice is this: take the leap, even if it’s scary. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Start small, keep learning, and trust that every step forward is a step in the right direction. I’m just happy to be on the journey.
