How to Budget When Your Income Is Different Every Month

Most budgeting advice assumes a paycheck that lands on the same day for the same amount. If you freelance, drive gigs, sell online, or work on commission, that advice breaks in month two.

Here's the system that works for irregular income. No apps required.

1. Budget from your lowest month, not your average

Look back 6–12 months and find your lowest-earning month. That number is your baseline budget. Rent, food, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments: all of it has to fit inside it.

If it doesn't fit, you've found the real problem, and it's better to find it now than in a slow month.

2. Build a buffer fund (your "income smoother")

Every month you earn above the baseline, the extra goes into a separate account: the buffer. Not savings, not fun money. The buffer.

Goal: 1 month of baseline expenses at first, then 3.

3. Pay yourself a salary

On the 1st of each month, move a fixed amount from the buffer into your everyday account. Same amount every month, whatever came in.

Good month? The buffer grows. Bad month? The buffer covers you.

4. Split every payment the moment it lands

When a client pays, divide it right away:

  • Taxes (often 25–30% if you're self-employed; check your local rules)
  • Buffer
  • Business expenses

Do it before you look at your balance.

5. Review monthly in 15 minutes

Once a month: what came in, what went to the buffer, did the salary cover the baseline? Adjust the salary up only after the buffer has held 3 months for a while.

That's the whole system. If you'd like it as fill-in pages, I made a 7-page printable planner with these worksheets. It's $5 here: https://reelhome4.gumroad.com/l/mgwqx — totally optional.

Either way, start with step 1 tonight. Find your lowest month.
