I Built a Free Book Cover Designer (Because Canva Pro Charges $156/Year)

Last year I was helping a friend design a book cover for their KDP launch. They needed something professional — a 6×9" print-ready PDF with their title, author name, and a genre-appropriate design.

I opened Canva. Found a decent template. Filled in the details. Hit download.

It worked. But then I thought: I just spent 20 minutes on a single book cover. And I'm paying $156 a year for this? For something I'll maybe use four times?

So I built something better that afternoon.

The Problem

Canva Pro is fantastic — if you're a full-time designer. But for self-published authors who need 1–4 covers a year, it's overkill and overpriced:

  1. $156/year for a tool you barely use
  2. Account required — your book details live on Canva's servers
  3. Subscription lock-in — cancel and your templates go with it
  4. Manual sizing — you have to figure out KDP's trim sizes yourself

It's like renting a Ferrari to drive to the grocery store.

What I Built

Book Cover Designer — a purpose-built, free, browser-based tool for self-published authors.

  • No account. Open the page, type your details, download.
  • No subscription. Free forever — no "Pro" tier, no watermarks.
  • No data collection. Everything runs in your browser. Your manuscript details never leave your device.
  • Works offline. Once loaded, you don't need internet.
  • KDP-ready. Exports to standard 6×9" format, print-ready for Kindle Direct Publishing, Draft2Digital, and more.

Features

  • 5 genre templates — Fiction, Non-Fiction, Romance, Thriller, Self-Help. Each with its own color palette and typography style.
  • Live preview — See your cover change in real time as you edit title, subtitle, author name, and colors.
  • Custom colors — Pick any background and accent color, or let the genre template handle it.
  • Image upload — Add a cover image or author photo as background.
  • Print-ready PDF — One click to export a high-quality PDF sized for paperback publishing.
  • Privacy first — 100% client-side. No server processing, no data storage.

Why It Matters

Self-published authors are entrepreneurs. Every dollar counts. Spending $156/year on a design tool you use quarterly is a choice — and it's not a good one. This tool exists because that choice shouldn't exist.

Whether you're launching your first novel or your tenth non-fiction book, your cover should be professional, your data should be private, and the tool should be free.
