I Built a Free Boords Alternative in One Afternoon (and You Should Use It)
I've been paying $180/year for Boords to storyboard my short films. Last weekend, I got fed up — their free tier watermarks every export, and their "starter" plan costs more than my entire film equipment budget.
So I built Storyboard Maker instead.
What It Does
Storyboard Maker is a free, browser-based visual planning tool. It runs entirely in your browser — no signup, no data leaves your device, no watermarks on your exports.
- Create scenes with unlimited panels
- Drag, resize, and arrange panels on a canvas
- Add text descriptions to each panel
- Upload reference images to panels
- Export as PNG or JSON for your workflow
- Auto-saves everything to your browser
It's not trying to replace ShotPro or Movie Magic Scheduling. It's for the people who just need to sketch out their shots quickly and move on.
Why It's Free
I built it as a free tool because I think creative tools shouldn't gatekeep accessibility behind subscription walls. If you're a student, a indie filmmaker, or a content creator on a budget — this is for you.
There's a 30-day refund promise (on the rare chance something breaks) but honestly, it works right now.
Try It
Go to tools.jackgreen.top/storyboard-maker — no account needed, just open and start creating.
If you've been paying for Boords or similar tools and resent the monthly fee, give it a shot. You might not need the subscription anymore.
Built with Konva.js and a lot of frustration at SaaS pricing.
