Why I Built a Federal Holidays Calendar

Every year around November, I'd find myself squinting at a printed calendar trying to figure out how to stretch my remaining PTO into long weekends. "Wait, is Veterans Day observed on Monday this year?" I'd ask my coworker, who shrugged. Half the time I'd book a flight and realize too late that the holiday fell on a Tuesday, not a Monday.

That frustration is what pushed me to build Public Holidays Hub.

The idea was simple: one place where you can see all US federal holidays for any year, with the actual observance dates, long weekend opportunities, and state-specific holidays. No pop-ups, no paywall, just a clean calendar.

A few things I added that I wish I'd had years ago:

Long weekend planner — the site highlights which holidays create 3-day or 4-day weekends, so you can plan PTO around them. Christmas on a Thursday? Take Friday off and you've got a 4-day stretch.

State holidays — because not every state observes the same days. I'm in a state where Cesar Chavez Day is official, and my old calendar app completely ignored it.

Printable PDFs — for the people on my team who still like a paper calendar on the wall. You can download and print the full year.

Stock market holidays — this one was a request from a friend in finance. The NYSE and NASDAQ don't always match federal holidays, so I added a separate view.

The site covers 2026 and 2027 right now, and I'll keep extending it forward. If you've ever missed a holiday or double-booked a vacation day, you might find it useful: publicholidayshub.com

It's free, no signup needed. Just open and browse.
