Scam businesses are UI designers that are in competition with you. They read the same cognitive work, use the same persuasion rules, and deliver on time, faster than most product teams. To create interfaces that are resistant to users involves knowing precisely what the UI of the attacker is up to and designing to combat it at the cognitive layer.
A major European bank, in 2025, conducted an A/B test on its wire transfer confirmation screen with a UX research team. Version A was the current design: a summary of the transfer details, a checkbox indicating that it was accurate, and a green "Confirm Transfer" button. Version B also added three new features: a delay of five seconds, which had to be fulfilled prior to the confirm button being enabled; a reformulated warning that named authorized push payment fraud and specifically referred to it; and a secondary message that asked whether the payee had been contacted via a different channel than the one the request was sent through.
Losses due to fraud via that screen decreased 23 percent in the Version B group in the next quarter. The fraud infrastructure was not any different. There was no change in the attacker's behavior. The difference was that the interface disrupted the cognitive path that the fraud relied on, and 23 percent of the successes that would have been achieved had it been successful were not.
This is the fundamental suggestion of protective UI design: interfaces that are actively designed to activate conscious analytical thought at the points where scam operations are primarily aimed at inhibiting it. The body of research is large. There is a large implementation surface. And the engineering fraternity has been less quick to regard it as a security discipline than it should be in view of the losses of fraud it is dealing with.
The Adversarial UI Model: What Scam Interfaces Are in Reality Doing.
To come up with interfaces that can guard against scams, you must have an accurate model of what scam interfaces are designed to do. The ultimate aim is not in the general sense of deception but rather the selective inhibition of System 2 thought at the particular decision-making juncture where the fraud needs to be acted upon. All design components of a good scam interface fulfill this oppressive purpose.
Urgency UI components, countdown timers, stock level displays, and session expiry notices are based on the idea that they trigger the state of threat response that causes cognitive processing to be reactive instead of analytic. The user is not pondering on whether the offer is real or not; he is pondering on whether he will miss it. The indicators of scarcity invoke loss aversion, one of the strongest and most stable biases of behavioral economics, which creates a motivational state that dominates the skeptical assessment that would have developed the page into a fake one.
The elements of visual authorities (trust badge visuals, the location of institutional logos, and color-coded schemes of color related to regulatory organizations) act by taking advantage of the automatic trust reactions that humans have learned through repeated encounters with legitimate institutions. A bank-like page triggers bank-interaction behavioral scripts, and a bank-like page with a look that looks like a bank page will activate the disposition to enter credentials when the user is asked to. The script will be executed prior to the analytical layer, determining that the page is a bank.
The reduction of friction in scam interfaces is both orchestrated and purposeful: the number of fields is low, some are pre-filled, and action flows are single clicks, all minimizing the amount of cognitive processing to be done before the analytical layer has ample time to take action. The design aim is to bring the user to the confirmation point as quickly as possible, using as few decision nodes as possible, in a cognitive state as far as possible from analytical evaluation.
Pattern 1 of Protective UI: Friction at Decision Points of High Stakes.
Provided that scam UI is tuned to achieve minimal friction at the harmful point of action, protective UI would add selective friction at these points—not to the interface in general, but to the transactions where cognitive suppression is most operationally useful to an attacker.
This was operationalized in Version B of the experiment at the bank. The five-second delay time, which is mandatory before the confirm button can be pressed, does not have much to do with allowing users time to read it; it is rather about breaking the automatic mode of execution that the urgency-inducing scam contact has triggered. An involuntary break will compel a shift to reactive processing. The alarming naming of authorized push payment fraud directly elevates schema-level recognition: the user now has a named category of what might be occurring, which triggers the analytical system required to consider whether it is.
Friction-as-protection implementation advice: The amount of friction must be commensurate with the risk of a transaction, rather than equal. Minimal friction can be expected in the case of a low-value domestic transfer to an established payee. An initial international transfer to an unverified payee exceeding a value limit should be heavily restricted either by default or with specified exceptions, a fraud warning with named cases, a secondary verification channel that the user can see, and an indication of the number of steps so that they are making a multi-stage decision and not a single step. The mechanism is friction; the objective is System 2 re-engagement and not compliance theater.
Pattern 2: Protective UI: Contextual Verification.
Interventions that best appear at the point when a user is assessing an external entity that they have not interacted with before are those that are displayed at the very time that the user is being presented with it, rather than onboarding documentation that the user read weeks or months ago and has forgotten or within a settings menu that the user has never visited in their life. "Contextual verification integration" refers to incorporating access to data on trust signals within the interaction flow at the risk point.
One implementation surface is browser extension architectures, which are a passive system that notifies of navigation events and detects when a user has visited a domain with a high-risk indicator and presents a non-blocking inline notification containing risk information prior to their interaction with the page content. The timing of the notification is vital it should be presented prior to the visual form of the page having an opportunity to stimulate the automatic response of trust on which it was constructed.
Platform-level integration offers a complementary surface: e-commerce platforms, payment processors, and financial applications can integrate URL risk checks and community report data in their interfaces at the step of selecting the payee and at the step of order confirmation. Instead of having users make a call to a different verification tool, a friction cost that would most likely cause most real-world applications to cease, the verification information is in line, in context, and at the point of decision where it is needed. Its combination with community-provided threat intelligence databases, including those of websites like Scam Alerts, gives real-time information on the ongoing fraud campaign, which allows contextualizing threat warnings, not generic ones.
Protective UI3: Anti-Urgency Pattern Language.
When urgency is a major suppression process in scam UI, protective interfaces must be crafted to expressly withstand urgency induction within the application being protected, as well as by providing a cognitive framework that recognizes urgency as a manipulation cue and not as a source of valid information.
In the interface, anti-urgency design refers to not providing design elements that artificially impose time pressure on high-stakes decisions countdown clocks at the transaction confirmation screen, session-timeout notices that appear throughout the process of making a payment, or expiry messages at the checkout step. These factors are typical of legitimate e-commerce and are inherited by conversion-rate optimization techniques without regard to the impact on the quality of user decisions on fraud-relevant transactions.
Inoculation is the second aspect of anti-urgency design: explicitly revealing the presence of the urgency as a manipulation tactic prior to the user experiencing it in an adversarial situation. In studies of psychological inoculation exposure to weak versions of a manipulation method accompanied by a description of its mechanism of action resistance to later full-strength versions of the same method is detectable. UI-embedded inoculation may be in the form of short contextual messages on payment screens: one sentence that fraudulent contacts will invoke a sense of urgency and a link to report suspicious contact. The cost of the information is low; the shielding impact to the users who later face the scam contact on the basis of urgency is quantifiable.
Pattern 4: Protective UI: Pattern: Trust Signal Legibility Architecture.
Trust signal illegibility is one of the most long-standing UI failure modes in the scam susceptibility scenario: the interface shows security indicators, but the meaning of these indicators cannot be comprehended by users without expert knowledge. A domain is presented in the URL bar. TLS is denoted by the padlock icon. The type of certificate is displayed in the security panel after 3 clicks. Most users would not be able to do anything about this unless it were translated.
Trust signal legibility architecture entails making information that is relevant to verification visible at the language layer that can be immediately understood without domain knowledge instead of being in an information hierarchy. The URL alone is not as actionable as a browser interface that shows both the first visit to this site and the URL. An actionable risk context is the presence of a payment interface with a message stating that the payee was added 3 minutes ago and the confirm button, as opposed to the presence of a payee name alone. A checkout flow that exposes the status of verification of the seller on the platform, with a clear definition of what verification means, would provide users with real discriminative data as opposed to visual trust badges, which they cannot authenticate.
The design rule in this case is that trust signals can only be protective when they are legible when the users can read them, determine whether they have been fulfilled, and modify their actions. A trust badge that must be clicked to obtain authenticity offers less protection compared to a plain language statement that has a meaning that is self-evident. The cost of engineering surface trust signals that are readable is low. The security value against users who would otherwise respond to visual cues that are not legible is great.
The Measurement Problem: What Do You Think of the Measurement?
Protective UI design has a challenge of measurement that cannot be measured using conventional UX metrics. Friction minimization is rewarded by conversion rate optimization. Incentives for friction introduction at appropriate places are provided by fraud prevention. Measures of session completion reward speed. Mandatory delays may be rewarded with scam susceptibility reduction. Protective UI objectives can be in opposition to the metrics that are optimal in the standard sense to optimize user experience.
Protective UI measurement frameworks should capture protective UI outcomes, not intermediate behavior: rate of loss to fraud by type of transaction and user group; user survey data on whether friction interventions were experienced as protecting or hindering; and rates of complaints to differentiate between legitimate user friction and fraud-prevention friction. The right outcome in the bank A/B test was the rate of fraud loss in the Version B cohort and not the intermediate measurements that would have served to posit that the design changes were needed.
Security Layer: Interface.
The four protective patterns explained here calibrated friction at high-stakes decision points, contextual verification integration, anti-urgency design language, and legible trust signal architecture all have a common underlying concept: the interface is a security layer, not a presentation layer. The timing, friction, language, and information hierarchy design choices can be quantitatively affected by design to increase or decrease the susceptibility of users to fraud, regardless of the technical security controls implemented elsewhere in the stack.
Scam operations see their interfaces as cognitive manipulation precision tools. Their design decisions are not random but driven by the same body of behavioral science literature that guides legitimate UX practice, but with the end goal of discouraging the analytical thought process that would detect the fraud. Creating interfaces with user protection in mind implies similar seriousness on the defensive side: the cognitive processes targeted by these mechanisms have to be comprehended, and defensive responses are explicit countermeasures built into the interaction flow at the points of exploitation of these mechanisms.
Its fusion with live threat intelligence such as community-driven blacklists such as Scam Alerts, that uncover ongoing fraud efforts based on real-time victim reports is what delivers the data layer that renders contextual protective actions actionable, as opposed to generic. A message relating to the cognitive intervention that refers to this domain has been reported by users as a scam in the last 48 hours and is not an identical cognitive intervention to the one that conveys the message "be careful online." The specificity transforms the warning into an input decision to be used. That specificity demands real-time community intelligence and that intelligence needs users who report on what they see to complete the feedback loop that makes the protection system work.
The UI of the attacker is effective, as it was created with a certain cognitive target. The same is the case with the UI of the defender.
