In an ideal world, for me, QA would primarily organize test cases. Including coverage of business requirements, expected behavior given standard input, and coordinating to define standard data across the enterprise.

Automated testing would be a requested feature from QA, for repetitive tasks such as regression and smoke testing.

QA should be WRITING the automated tests -- and monitoring them! QA should be DEV. In fact, to a degree, everyone should be DEV. We are entering a brave new world, everyone should code to a more or less degree of sophistication.

I dont think so. QA doing CODING is different that QA not existing. A Developer never has time for doing testing in a good and fast manner, and that is why we QA member help a lot. Also for controlling Documentation, requirements, and a lot of other helps.

Automated testing is another tool used by QA to ensure the quality of the product going out the door. It's not taking over their job but helps them in doing it.

QA highlights risk areas. Humans are involved to spot things computers cannot. Computers are there to enable new levels of testing that aren't possible by mere mortals.
