Subscription trackers all promise the same thing: stop losing money to forgotten renewals. But they take very different approaches to your data to get there — and that difference matters more than most comparison posts admit.
I built SubScale after getting frustrated that every "simple" tracker either wanted bank access or locked basic features behind a subscription of its own (the irony). Here's an honest breakdown of where the three main approaches differ.
The core trade-off
There are really two categories here, not three:
Bank-linked trackers (Rocket Money) connect to your accounts through an aggregator like Plaid and automatically detect subscriptions by scanning your transaction history. Rocket Money requires an account and bank connection to function — there's no manual-only mode. The upside is zero setup effort; the trade-off is that a third party has a continuously updated read on your entire spending history, not just your subscriptions, for as long as that connection stays open.
Manual trackers (Bobby, SubScale) ask you to add subscriptions yourself. No bank access, no transaction scanning. The trade-off is a few minutes of setup; what you get back is that no financial institution data ever leaves your device.
Where Bobby and SubScale actually differ
Both are manual, privacy-respecting trackers — but not identical:
| SubScale | Bobby | Rocket Money | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account required | No | No | Yes |
| Bank connection | Never | Never | Required |
| Platform | iOS, Android | iOS only | iOS, Android, web |
| Data storage | 100% on-device | On-device | Server-side |
| Free trial tracking | Yes | No | Limited |
| Renewal calendar | Yes (weekly/monthly/quarterly) | Basic | Yes |
| Spending analytics | Yes | Basic | Yes |
| Export (PDF/Excel) | Yes (premium) | No | No |
| App Store privacy label | No data linked to identity | Purchases & identifiers linked to identity | Full financial data access |
| Pricing | Free + premium tier | One-time IAP unlock | Free + $6–12/mo premium |
The detail worth sitting with: even Bobby, which markets itself on not requiring a bank connection, still links purchases and identifiers to your identity per its own App Store privacy label. SubScale's label reports nothing linked to your identity at all — no accounts means there's nothing to link it to.
Who should pick what
- Want full automation and don't mind a third party seeing your bank transactions? Rocket Money's detection and bill negotiation are genuinely useful, and it's the only one of the three with a web app.
- Want privacy and don't need calendar views, trial tracking, or spending analytics? Bobby is a clean, minimal, one-time-purchase option, but iOS-only.
- Want privacy and the fuller feature set — renewal calendar, trial alerts, category analytics, export — across both iOS and Android, without an account or bank link? That's the gap SubScale is built for.
No tool here is "wrong" — they're optimized for different trade-offs. But if you've been assuming privacy and features are mutually exclusive in this category, that's no longer quite true.
