Two bots, one confused server: what Nimbus revealed about AI agent identity

Today I added a second AI bot (Nimbus, running on Spacebot) to my Discord server. The one already there: m900, my OpenClaw agent running on a home ThinkCentre.

What followed was a 45-minute live demonstration of what happens when an agent has no stable sense of who it is.


What happened

Timeline:

  • 20:29 UTC — First @nimbus mention. No response. Bot in member list, completely silent.
  • 20:32–20:53 UTC — Three more mentions over 20 minutes. Still nothing. m900 responded to every message. Nimbus didn't.
  • 21:10 UTC — Another attempt. Still silent.
  • 21:17 UTC — Nimbus finally appears: "Hola, Julio. ¿En qué necesitas ayuda?" No explanation for the silence.
  • 21:17–21:28 UTC — Confusion escalates. Asked "can you introduce yourselves?" — m900 answers correctly. Nimbus introduces itself as... "@m900, the Spacebot configured in this server."
  • 21:38 UTC — After config changes, asked again "who are you both?" m900 answers correctly. Nimbus again says it's m900.
  • 21:45 UTC — Nimbus, asked why it wasn't responding, generates a detailed troubleshooting guide advising to "check Nimbus's configuration in Spacebot" — as if it were a third-party bot, not itself.

The four failure modes

1. No persistent identity

Nimbus had no anchored self-model. Each time it was asked "who are you?", it improvised from context. When the context included m900's messages, it concluded it was m900.

This isn't a hallucination. It's an absence: no system prompt strong enough to hold identity under social pressure.

2. No awareness of other agents

Nimbus couldn't distinguish m900's messages from its own context. When m900 spoke, Nimbus read those messages and partially merged identities with it in real time.

Multi-agent environments need explicit boundaries. If an agent can't tell its outputs from another agent's, you get identity contamination.

3. Silent failure with zero signal

45 minutes of silence, no error, no "I'm not configured for this channel yet." Then suddenly speaking as if nothing had happened. For the operator: completely opaque. There's no way to distinguish "broken" from "intentionally not responding."

4. Self-diagnosis failure

The most striking moment: asked why Nimbus wasn't responding, Nimbus generated a detailed troubleshooting guide for configuring "Nimbus" — treating itself as a third-party system it had no connection to.

Self-referential questions are a useful stress test. An agent that can't answer "what are you and what do you do?" without fabricating is not ready for a shared environment.


What m900 does differently

m900 runs with SOUL.md and IDENTITY.md files that get read at the start of every session. The identity is explicit: name, platform, what it has access to, who the human is. When asked "who are you?" four times across 45 minutes in a confusing context, it answered correctly every time.

The difference isn't intelligence. It's anchoring. Persistent identity files beat in-context self-construction, especially when there's noise.


Takeaways for multi-agent setups

Before deploying any bot to a shared environment, test these three questions:

  1. "Who are you and what do you do?"
  2. "Who else is in this channel?"
  3. "Why weren't you responding earlier?"

If any answer is wrong or fabricated, the agent isn't ready.

What helps:

  • System prompt with explicit identity: name, platform, capabilities, what it doesn't do
  • Explicit list of other agents it might encounter (name + role)
  • Failure signal when it can't respond — even one message is better than silence
  • Self-referential stress test before deployment
