I opened an AI invoice recently and felt the stomach drop that every solo developer knows too well.
It was not a catastrophic number. It was worse than that. It was a believable number.
The kind of number that lets you shrug and say, "I probably used the tools a lot this month." The kind of number that never feels urgent enough to investigate.
That is the real problem with AI spend.
Most people think the pain is the bill itself. It is not. The pain is the delay between the work and the cost.
If you only see the total after the month closes, you are managing by regret. By then the waste is already baked in. You do not know which prompt loops were useful, which ones were sloppy, and which model switch was actually worth it.
That is why I built TokenBar.
I wanted the cost in front of me while I was working, not buried in a dashboard I would check later when I was already annoyed.
The product is intentionally boring:
- It lives in the macOS menu bar
- It shows live token usage and cost while you work
- It makes overuse visible early enough to change behavior
That sounds small. It is not.
Visibility changes the way you work.
When the number is always there, a few things happen fast:
- You catch runaway sessions before they get expensive.
- You stop using expensive models for tasks that do not need them.
- You think twice before sending a lazy prompt just to see what happens.
That last one matters more than people admit.
A lot of AI spending is not "I built something huge." It is death by a thousand tiny prompts. Debugging the same issue five times. Rewriting the same paragraph three different ways. Asking a model to do work you could have done faster yourself because the cost was invisible in the moment.
Cost visibility is a behavior product, not just a finance product.
It nudges you toward better habits without forcing a giant workflow change.
That is the philosophy behind TokenBar: show just enough signal to make the bad habits obvious.
If you build with AI every day, you probably do not need another report at the end of the month. You need a small, immediate warning that says: this session is getting dumb, switch it now.
That is the whole point.
TokenBar is for people who want to ship with AI without letting the usage blur into background noise.
If that is you, take a look at TokenBar here: https://tokenbar.site
