Something shifted this year and most small merchants haven't noticed: product discovery is moving out of the search box and into the chat box.
ChatGPT shows product cards with live prices. Shopify's catalog auto-syncs into AI storefronts. Meta's Muse (announced Sept 2026) lets US users check out via Shop Pay without leaving the conversation. The user doesn't visit ten blue links anymore — the AI recommends 2–3 specific, buyable options.
What this changes for store owners
Traditional SEO was about rankings. The new game is about being picked. And the criteria are different:
- Feeds > pages. ~65% of ChatGPT shopping recommendations come from structured feeds. If your products aren't in the feed pool, your beautiful site is invisible.
- Data quality is the ranking factor. Complete titles, real descriptions, filled attributes, consistent prices — this is the new "on-page SEO."
- Freshness is survival. One recommended stockout and you get demoted. Stale catalogs rot in AI memory.
- Reviews outrank your own site. AI trusts Reddit, review platforms, and YouTube more than your homepage.
3 things to do this week (free)
-
Check your robots.txt — make sure you're not blocking
GPTBot,OAI-SearchBot,ClaudeBot,PerplexityBot. (2 minutes) -
Run one product page through Google Rich Results Test — if
Product/Offerschema is missing, that's your weekend project. (5 minutes) - Spot-check your feed↔page price consistency — especially if you just ran a sale. (5 minutes)
That's it. Twelve minutes, zero dollars, and you're ahead of most stores.
I wrote a longer breakdown of all 9 factors and built a free one-minute scanner that checks them automatically:
