I Tried to Leave the Terminal Eight Times. The Ninth Finally Stuck.

In October last year Claude Code pulled me into the terminal, and I basically lived there until this week. Ten months of running my agent Wiz, spinning up projects, building and killing ideas, all from a black window with a blinking cursor. I felt good there. I had zero problem with it.

And the whole time, quietly, I was hunting for something better.

This post is the full log of that hunt: eight interfaces I tried and abandoned over ten months, why each one almost worked, and the ninth that finally made me close the terminal. It is not a review. It is me admitting I spent most of a year migrating my entire working setup back and forth because I could not name what I actually wanted until I found it.

**The two worlds problem that nobody warns you about.** My AI world lived in the terminal. My human world lived in boards and task apps. I explain why bridging those two surfaces with clever plumbing, including a task-comment integration I am genuinely proud of, still leaves you feeling the border crossing every single time you work.

**Why software with exactly one user dies.** In February I built my own boards app, native to how I wanted macOS to feel. It worked. It was genuinely usable. I walk through the specific maintenance tax that killed it, and why "just give that to your agent" does not solve the part that actually costs you.

**The eight failures, named.** Fizzy, Basecamp, TickTick, cmux, T3 Code, Claude Code in the desktop app, the Codex app. Each one gets an honest verdict, including which ones I still recommend and which one gave me the first real signal that my setup was wrong. That signal came from watching where my hands went, not from anything I decided.

**What bb actually gets right, feature by feature.** Child threads I can watch and steer mid-flight instead of waiting for a summary from a black box. Threads that message each other like a team sharing a hallway. A whole category of delivery glue code I maintained for months that just stopped existing. And the one that closes the loop on the entire post: tasks that live where the work lives, so the board cannot lie anymore.

**The pattern underneath all nine attempts.** There is one thread running through every tool that failed and the one that stuck, and naming it changed how I think about buying software in the agentic era. It also has me, after 20 years on macOS, seriously considering Linux.

The part that surprised me most is the correction at the end, and it is not the tool recommendation you would expect.
