In my first week of learning, I discovered how crucial a GitHub profile is. Whether you are a Data Analyst, a Software Engineer, or anyone in the tech space, GitHub is an essential tool. Itโs a platform that allows you to showcase your projects for free, and recruiters use it to determine if your skills are a good match.
Here is a simple step-by-step guide to transform your GitHub profile from basic to bold, captivating, and impactful.
Your GitHub profile will go;
From this...
To this...
Here is a Step-by-Step Guide on how you can go about it;
Step 1: Create a New Repository
To create a profile ReadMe, you need to create a new repository with the exact same name as your GitHub username.
- Example: If your username is JulesInData, your repo name must be JulesInData.
- Make sure it is set to Public and initialized with a README file.
Step 2: Draft Your Intro
Think about a short, punchy introduction. Who are you? What are your goals? Having this ready makes the next steps much easier.
Step 3: Visit the GPRM Webpage
Go to GPRM website tap on the link or simply go to your browser, open new tab and search GitHub Profile ReadMe Maker tap on the one With the initials GPRM. This tool simplifies the entire process.
Step 4: Enter Your Details
Input your GitHub username into the tool. This allows the generator to pull your stats and link your profile correctly.
Step 5: Customize Your "About Me"
You can choose to skip the "About" since you already wrote it as the first thing when creating your new repository back in step 2.
Step 6: Flex Your GitHub Stats
Go to the next section to add your "GitHub Stats". You can adjust the themes and colors here to match your personal brand. That's the only thing to do, pick a theme on the dropdown menu.
I personally picked radical, just browse them to get what fits your style.
Step 7: Social Media Links
You can choose to add your social media links here or skip this step if you prefer to stay private it's really up to you.
Step 8: Pick Your Tools and Tech Stack
Pick all the tools you are currently using or learning in your course. These icons vary according to your course and even the OS youโre using.
If you're in Data Science and Analytics, make sure to look for icons that match your data tools such as Python, SQL, PowerBI, or Excel and show off your specific toolkit!
Just tap on the plus sign beside the tool and add as many as you want. For an easy add there's a search button at the top where you can just type in the tool you are looking for.
Step 9: Copy the Code
Skip to the preview page and once you are happy with the preview, click the button to Copy the Code generated by the tool.
Step 10: Commit the Changes
Go to your GitHub repository, the one matching your username, the one you created on Step 1, paste the code into the README.md file, and click Commit Changes. Go to your profile and see the magic you just created.
Conclusion
Your profile is now more striking and punchy! It's a story of who you are as a professional. Adding a profile photo goes a long way too but we all know your projects will speak for themselves.
