We launched SubCenter.io in 2025—just the two of us, a husband-and-wife team of software engineers—because we were tired of getting hit with unexpected subscription charges. Too often, we’d only realize we were still paying for something when a forgotten charge popped up on our credit card statement. Even big-name services rarely sent reminders before billing us. And they still don’t!
How We Built SubCenter.io
We started working on SubCenter.io as a side project four months ago, and we officially launched it one month ago. It’s still our side hustle, and we continue to improve it while balancing our full-time jobs. Every week, we refine features, squash bugs, and add new functionality to make it even more useful.
From a technical perspective, we built SubCenter.io using:
- Ruby on Rails 8 – Our framework of choice for its productivity and simplicity.
- Kamal – For seamless deployment and server orchestration.
- PostgreSQL – A solid, reliable database to handle subscription data efficiently.
