OpenAI & SBDC Launch AI Training for Small Businesses

OpenAI is teaming up with America's SBDC network to bring practical AI training to small businesses — and instead of training business owners directly, the plan is to train the trainers first.

The pilot plan

The initial phase aims to train around 150 SBDC advisors through OpenAI Academy's Community Trainer Program, with a goal of reaching at least 1,000 businesses through in-person workshops. Advisors then extend support through workshops, one-on-one advising, and jointly developed resources.

Those numbers are the pilot's planned reach, not completed training or demonstrated results — worth keeping in mind when the headlines fly.

What the workshops will cover

According to OpenAI, America's SBDC plans to select advisors for a training and credentialing pathway focused on helping businesses apply AI. The partners plan Academy Workshops with SBDC networks — at least one workshop at each participating network, which notably doesn't mean every local SBDC center.

Advisors and clients who complete the in-person workshops will also receive free access to ChatGPT Plus, though the announcement doesn't specify how long that access lasts.

The train-the-trainer model

The interesting choice here is the delivery model: use the existing SBDC advisory network — 63 member organizations and nearly 1,000 local centers serving 1 million entrepreneurs annually — as distribution, rather than building a new training channel from scratch.

SBDC notes its existing AI U certification program has already trained more than 500 advisors. That figure is separate from the new OpenAI pilot; the overlap between the two groups isn't specified.
