Changing a gaming keypad is an input migration. A profile may contain the same action names while the physical controls, output mode and combinations you can hold comfortably all change.
The recent Razer Tartarus V2 Pro is a useful example. The original Tartarus Pro uses an eight-way directional pad; the V2 Pro introduces a TMR analog thumbstick and a different nearby-button arrangement. That creates a concrete test problem: can the new configuration preserve the actions your game actually needs?
This is an adapted technical companion to our Tartarus V2 Pro versus Tartarus Pro comparison on KeyboardTester.click. We maintain KBT. The method below is useful independently of that buying guide and can also be applied to other remappable input devices.
1. Define the behavior before mapping controls
Start with a small acceptance matrix. Write actions and combinations, then decide which physical control should produce each one.
| Action | Required combination | Acceptance condition |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Diagonal movement plus mouse aim | Both remain active without an unexpected input-mode switch |
| Jump | Jump while continuing movement | No movement release needed to reach the jump control |
| Modifier | Modifier plus the usual ability keys | Every required combination reaches the game |
| Sprint or crouch | Direction change while held or toggled | The action starts and stops in the intended mode |
| Weapon cycle or zoom | Both directions and any separate wheel press | Each old function has a reachable replacement |
Keep the conditions specific. “The keys work” does not tell you whether you can hold movement, a modifier and an ability together.
Record the device model, firmware/software version, operating system, browser, game and mapping mode. Change one setting between attempts. Otherwise a different actuation setting or game configuration can make the comparison difficult to interpret.
2. Separate the three observation layers
Original KBT illustration. It explains different control mechanisms; it is not a product photograph or an exact device layout.
There are three different questions:
- Physical control: can you reach and operate the intended controls together?
- Delivered input: which keyboard events or controller values does the application receive?
- Game behavior: does the game interpret those inputs as the intended actions?
A pass at one layer does not establish a pass at the next. A browser may receive W and Space correctly while a game uses a different profile. A gamepad axis may appear in a browser while a particular game handles controller movement plus mouse aiming poorly.
3. Validate simple digital mappings first
For a keyboard-mode check, map a few controls to ordinary letters. Focus a keyboard-event display, press each control, hold it briefly, and release it. Then repeat with the combinations from the matrix.
Use the observable result as the criterion: the expected press reaches the page, and the displayed held state clears after release. If a combination fails, isolate it into individual controls before assuming a hardware fault. Mapping rules, focus, operating-system shortcuts and browser shortcuts can also affect what reaches the page.
For developers inspecting events, KeyboardEvent.code and key answer different questions. code represents the reported physical-key position; key reflects the interpreted value. With a remapped peripheral, neither is a measurement of which physical keypad switch your finger moved. Capture the configured mapping alongside the event results.
Also distinguish repeated keydown events from separate physical presses. An application that counts every repeat as a new press can make a held control look like repeated activation. Focus changes deserve a separate check because an application may miss releases after it loses focus.
Our keyboard event display is one convenient way to inspect delivered digital input. It cannot certify actuation depth, raw USB report rate or end-to-end hardware latency.
4. Test analog mode as a separate configuration
If the thumbstick is configured to emit W/A/S/D, the application receives digital directions. That does not become a continuous analog signal simply because the physical control is a stick.
For controller-style output, first establish that the configured device is exposed to the application. The browser's Gamepad API can expose axes and buttons when supported. Browser permissions, user interaction and the device's selected mode can affect availability; absence in one browser alone is not evidence of a defective stick.
When axes are available, observe small movement, full travel, diagonals and return to center. Record the mapping rather than assuming that a particular axis index is always the intended control. These observations describe the values the browser receives; they do not certify the sensor's calibration or the game's deadzone behavior.
5. Finish the acceptance test inside the game
Repeat the matrix with mouse aiming active. Include slow movement, diagonal movement, full stick travel, jumping, menus, and the most demanding modifier combination.
Watch for input prompts switching unexpectedly, movement dropping during mouse motion, or a control that works alone but becomes hard to reach in a combination. Save the working configuration and repeat it after any software/profile change relevant to that setup.
The Tartarus example also illustrates why feature lists need checking before a migration. As checked on September 22, 2026, Razer's original Tartarus Pro page already advertises Rapid Trigger. It is not exclusive to the new model. Razer lists a wider adjustable actuation range for the V2 Pro, but a smaller setting is not evidence that the complete input scheme performs better for its user.
The useful result is a completed acceptance matrix: all essential actions remain mapped, simultaneous actions are reachable, and the intended game accepts the selected input modes together. An unresolved row identifies what to investigate before committing to the new setup.
