Switching between ChatGPT and Claude? How to make AI remember your context

Tired of re-explaining who you are, what you're working on and what you've already decided every time you switch AIs? Boil it down to one short context note. Paste it yourself, save it in each AI's settings, or let a shared memory carry it for you.

Three options, pick by how often you switch

Option For Good Pain
1. Keep an AI context prompt yourself people who switch now and then Free, about 5 minutes You paste it into every new chat and update it yourself
2. Put it in each AI's custom instructions people who mostly use one or two AIs Free; set once and that AI reads it automatically Change one thing and you update every copy
3. Sync with a shared memory extension people who switch between AIs every day Carried over automatically, nothing to paste Early access: desktop Chrome only, invite code required

Why does every AI start from zero?

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok don't share memory. When one hits its usage limit, or another is better at coding or writing, the new AI doesn't know you. It has no idea about your project or what you've decided, so you end up feeding it all the context again.

Option 1: Keep an AI context prompt yourself

  1. Ask the AI that knows your current work best:

“Summarize what you know about me and my current project in one page: my role, goals, decisions already made and how I like answers. Facts only, no guessing.”

  1. Read through what it wrote and delete anything wrong or out of date.
  2. Save it in your notes app.
  3. Next time you start a chat in another AI, paste it in first as background.

Pain: When things change, like a pushed deadline or a reversed decision, you have to edit the note or it goes stale. And you have to remember to paste it every time.

Option 2: Put it in each AI's custom instructions

Paste the same note into each AI's settings. From then on, new chats there read it automatically:

  • ChatGPT: Custom Instructions, or the instructions of a custom GPT.
  • Claude: a Project's instructions.
  • Gemini: Saved Info.

They reach different places: ChatGPT's Custom Instructions apply to all chats; a Claude Project's instructions apply only inside that project.

Pain: Upkeep. Any change means opening each AI and editing it one by one. Claude can now import memory from another AI, but that's a one-time copy; after that the two drift apart again.

Option 3: Sync with a shared memory extension

Since the AIs don't talk to each other, keep the memory somewhere outside all of them. Kiomi Memory is a Chrome extension that does this for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok:

  • Only your words. It saves only what you say as memories. The AI's replies are never saved as memories.
  • Rather miss than mislead. An unrelated memory throws the AI off more than a missing one. So when you send a message, Kiomi adds only the few most relevant memories and leaves out anything it's unsure about. What it added is clearly marked.
  • Corrections replace the old fact. Change your mind (“it's Thursday now, not Tuesday”) and the new memory replaces the old one. Better to keep one fact fewer than to keep a wrong one.
  • You stay in control. Pause it any time or turn it off for one chat. To wipe everything, delete it all at kiomi.ai.

Note: Kiomi is in early access. Desktop Chrome only, sign-up needs an invite code, and it can occasionally miss things.

FAQ

Can I move my ChatGPT memory to Claude?

Partly. Ask ChatGPT for a summary (see Option 1) or use Claude's memory import. Both are one-time snapshots: check them after the move, and later changes still have to be made on both sides.

Is it safe to give my context note to other AIs or a memory extension?

Only include what you're fine with an AI company processing. Whether it goes into an AI's settings or a memory extension, leave out passwords, ID numbers and card numbers.
