Okay so yesterday our CTO opened the KODA source code, scrolled through the folders, and hit us with the most valid question in startup history:
"Hey bro⦠where is the backend?"
And we had to look him in the eye and say:
"Bro. There is no backend. There never was." π
His soul left his body. So let us explain how an entire ecosystem of apps runs with ZERO traditional servers β in community language, no corporate speak, we promise.
πͺ¦ Layer 1: The Database That Guards Itself (Supabase)
We don't run a database server in a closet somewhere. We use Supabase β managed Postgres that lives in the cloud.
The coolest part? Row Level Security (RLS). Think of RLS like a bouncer built INTO the database. If you're not authenticated, the database itself says "nah bro" and rejects your query. The security doesn't live in our code β it lives in the vault.
Yes, this means even the legendary bathroom posts on Dojo Feed are protected by enterprise-grade database security. Respect the architecture. π½π
π§ Layer 2: We Don't Own a Brain. We Rent One. (Groq + OpenRouter)
Running our own AI models would require GPUs we definitely cannot afford (or plug in).
So KODA rents intelligence by the token:
- Primary call goes to Groq (stupid fast inference).
- If Groq ghosts us, a fallback chain automatically reroutes to OpenRouter.
- Every request logs which model answered, so we know exactly who's carrying the team.
We don't own the brain. We own the orchestration. Big difference.
π΄ Layer 3: Code That Naps When Nobody's Around (Edge Functions)
When we DO need server-side logic (hiding API keys, webhooks, validation), we use Vercel + Cloudflare edge functions.
Here's the meme: traditional servers are like a restaurant that stays open 24/7 even when empty. Edge functions are a pop-up food stall that literally ceases to exist when there are no customers, then instantly reappears when someone orders.
Scale to zero = our code takes naps. Our bill stays at $0. We love a frugal function.
πͺ Layer 4: YOUR Phone Is The Server (WebAssembly / APIC)
The heaviest job in our ecosystem β image processing in APIC β doesn't run on our infrastructure at all.
It runs inside your browser using WebAssembly and on-device AI. Your images never upload. Never. The processing happens on YOUR device.
Which means every time you remove a background in APIC, your phone is doing push-ups for science. Thank your phone today. π±ποΈ
π€ "But Why Build It Like This?"
Simple: HYNAWEB's flagship products were built on a $150 Android phone. No laptop. No server rack. No DevOps team.
When your hardware is limited, your architecture has to be elite. Constraints didn't slow us down β they forced us into the most modern stack in the game:
β
Managed data (Supabase)
β
Rented inference (Groq/OpenRouter)
β
Napping compute (Edge functions)
β
Client-side muscle (WASM)
