133 Studies Later: What Gaming Actually Trains in the Brain
Gaming discourse still swings between two lazy extremes: “brain rot” and “superpower.”
The newer evidence is more useful than either.
A 2026 meta-analysis in Acta Psychologica reviewed 133 studies, 269 effect sizes, and 14,245 participants. The signal was not huge, but it was consistent: video game play showed statistically significant positive associations with memory, spatial ability, visual attention, cognitive control, and intelligence.
That matters because small, repeatable effects are often more believable than grand claims.

Games seem to work less like magic and more like repeated cognitive practice.
- Action-heavy play sharpens fast perception and attention shifts.
- Strategy and puzzle play reward planning, abstraction, and problem-solving.
- Multiplayer play turns coordination, communication, and shared goal-setting into lived behavior rather than theory.

- Stop defending games only as entertainment.
- Stop overselling them as miracle medicine.
- Start describing them as skill environments with measurable tradeoffs.
That framing is stronger because it is precise.
It gives developers, educators, and players a clearer language for what games actually do well.
The more interesting question
The debate should probably move from:
Are games good or bad?
to:
Which kinds of games train which kinds of ability, for which players, in which contexts?
That is a much better design problem.
