Obsidian.md's growing hostility toward plugin developers

Obsidian does not value plugin creators, as evidenced by the fact that:

  • It takes more than three months to have your plugin approved

  • Moderator "WhiteNoise" does not agree that Obsidian would die without the plugin marketplace

  • My post was removed for "misinterpreting" his words and I was subsequently banned when I questioned the decision.

  • edit: When I posted this thread to the Obsidian forums, I was immediately IP banned with no response.

Now let's be absolutely clear: without the community and the thousands upon thousands of hours of free labor provided by plugin developers, Obsidian is just another markdown editor. Yet, instead of rolling out the red carpet for the people building their product’s value for free, the leadership treats us as nuisances to be managed or silenced.

When you purge valid criticism, you surround yourselves with "yes-men" who will applaud every decision while the actual user base grows increasingly frustrated with the stagnation and the hostility.

This isn’t just about one ban or one delayed approval queue. It is about the arrogance of believing that you are too big to fail. History is littered with software companies that ignored their developers and turned on their power users. The moment you start fighting the people who champion your software is the moment the decline begins.

We are not locked into your ecosystem. The files are local markdown, remember? That was your selling point, and it will be your undoing. We can take our notes, our workflows, and our development talent to Logseq, to Anytype, or to whatever open-source alternative respects our time and our contributions.

Keep banning us. Keep deleting threads. All you are doing is proving my point and accelerating the exodus. The community is the platform, and we are waking up to the fact that we deserve better.

Banning me will not make the problem go away. Banning me will not make US go away.

I have spoken to countless others Obsidian has banned for extremely minor criticisms.

The internet is a very large place and you do not have control over it, nor me, nor anyone else.

You will not continue to get away with censorship, which is and always has been the tool of choice of the weak and of corrupt institutions.
