Short answer: HMRC doesn't legally require it. But you should get one anyway.
Here's why.
The legal position
As a sole trader in the UK, there's no legal requirement to have a separate business bank account. HMRC doesn't mandate it. You can run everything through your personal account.
But "you can" and "you should" are very different things.
Why a separate account matters
1. Tax returns become 10x easier
When all business income and expenses flow through one account, your tax return is a simple bank statement export. No scrolling through Deliveroo orders trying to remember which lunch was a client meeting.
2. HMRC investigations
If HMRC investigates you (it happens), they can request bank statements. If business and personal are mixed, they see everything: your rent, your subscriptions, your 2am Amazon purchases. A separate account limits their view to business transactions only.
3. Late payment tracking
With a dedicated account, you can instantly see which invoices have been paid and which are overdue. No mental maths. No spreadsheet cross-referencing.
4. It looks professional
Payment details on invoices that say "J Smith — Business Account" vs "J Smith — Current Account". Small thing. Matters to some clients.
The best free options
You don't need to pay for a business account. Several UK banks offer free accounts for sole traders:
- Starling Bank — Free business account, instant notifications, integrates with accounting software
- Tide — Free plan, good invoicing features, 20p per ATM withdrawal
- Mettle (NatWest) — Free, no transaction fees, backed by a high street bank
- HSBC Kinetic — Free for 12 months

When you definitely need one
- Limited company: Legally required. Company money is not your money.
- VAT registered: Not required but strongly recommended for audit clarity.
- Earning over £50k: MTD from April 2026 requires digital record-keeping. Separate accounts make this much simpler.
Setup takes 10 minutes
Most app-based banks (Starling, Tide) let you open an account in under 10 minutes from your phone. No branch visit. No paperwork.
