Indiana Layoffs 2026: WARN Numbers Explained
Indiana's WARN archive is one of the deepest in the country: 1,179 non-cancelled notices reporting 150,523 affected workers, stretching back to 2008. It is also a state where the current picture looks very different from the headline total — and that difference is worth understanding before quoting either number.
What the data shows right now
In the last 365 days, Indiana has 34 eligible official filings reporting 5,221 affected workers — with zero worker counts unavailable, which makes Indiana's current-year data unusually complete. By calendar year so far in 2026: 27 notices covering 4,001 workers.
For context, 2025 saw 34 notices covering 4,643 workers, and 2024 saw 38 notices covering 3,175. So 2026 is roughly on last year's pace in notice count, while worker totals are running a bit higher. None of these are record years; the archive's peaks were 2020 (160 notices, 33,490 workers) and 2009 (120 notices, 19,453 workers) — the COVID shock and the financial crisis.
Remember what these numbers are: reported plans, not confirmed job losses. A WARN notice is an advance filing an employer makes with the state before a qualifying layoff or plant closure. Some are amended later, some events shrink or are canceled. Layoff Atlas counts notices, not unique people or completed layoffs.
Manufacturing dominates the 2026 filings
The recent Indiana filings read like a tour of the state's industrial economy:
- SIMOS Insourcing Solutions, Avon — 572 workers, layoff, effective Aug 17, 2026
- humano, Avon — 586 workers, closure, effective Aug 17, 2026
- Thyssenkrupp Presta North America, Terre Haute — 207 workers, closure, effective Mar 31, 2027
- Postal Center International, Brownsburg — 151 workers, closure, effective Aug 13, 2026
- PMG Indiana, Columbus — 150 workers, closure, effective Dec 31, 2026
- ZF Active Safety & Electronics US, Lafayette — 133 workers, closure, effective Nov 30, 2026
- Owens Corning, Walkerton — 130 workers, closure, effective Sep 19, 2026
- Snyder's-Lance, Jeffersonville — 111 workers, closure, effective Sep 15, 2026
- Forest River, Bristol — 105 workers, closure, effective Sep 17, 2026
- Noble Inc., Indianapolis — 85 workers, layoff, effective Jun 2, 2026
- Ryder Integrated Logistics, Plainfield — 76 workers, layoff, effective Jul 31, 2026
- Packaging Corporation of America, Gas City — 72 workers, closure, effective Nov 2, 2026
The two Avon filings on the same date — a staffing provider and a closure at the same site — are a pattern worth noting: when a staffing firm's layoff filing lands on the same effective date and city as a company's closure filing, the two usually describe one event counted from two sides. Don't add them together.
Auto supply (ZF, Thyssenkrupp), building materials (Owens Corning), packaging, RVs (Forest River) and food manufacturing (Snyder's-Lance) account for most of the 2026 worker total. This is manufacturing-heavy Indiana looking like itself.
What is still ahead
Four notices have future effective dates. The scheduled events: Packaging Corporation of America in Gas City (72 workers, Nov 2), ZF Active Safety in Lafayette (133, Nov 30), PMG Indiana in Columbus (150, Dec 31), and the largest of the set, Thyssenkrupp Presta in Terre Haute (207, Mar 31, 2027). Together that's about 560 workers with separations still on the calendar.
The archive vs. the present
The 150,523-worker archive total includes years of manufacturing cycles that no longer describe today's labor market. When you see a big all-time number for a state, check the current year: Indiana's 2026 filings (4,001 workers) are under 3% of the archive total. The archive tells you the state's exposure and its filing history; the last 365 days tell you what's actually happening.
One more data note: 178 of the 1,179 notices in the archive have unavailable worker counts, but the current-year official filings are fully counted. Indiana's state portal reports headcounts consistently, which is more than can be said for several states.
