DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017: what actually changed

DeepSeek shipped V4.1 Flash 1017 on 17 October. The interesting part is not the benchmark chart — it is the output length.

Shorter outputs are the quietest cost lever in a coding-agent workload. An agent that produces the same diff in fewer tokens costs less per task without the rate changing at all. DeepSeek's own framing for 1017 is a Pareto improvement: stronger benchmarks, faster task completion, shorter outputs. Better on quality and latency at the same time is rare enough to nodeepseek

On the API side, model names stay stable. deepseek-flash keeps pointing at the current V4.1 Flash build, so a configuration written before the upgrade keeps working after it. Nothing to rename, nothing to re-test.

One thing worth knowing if you run the model through a gateway rather than the official platform: the build you get depends on the upstream account, not on the name in your config. Ask the provider which build they serve, and check it periodically — that is the difference between "V4.1 Flash" and "V4.1 Flash 1017".

We serve 1017 and keep the model names stable across builds. If your card is the part that keeps failing, that is a separate post.
