Can't Decide? Ask ChatGPT to Lay Out the Tradeoffs in 60 Seconds
Big decisions stall because everything lives in your head at once. The price, the risk, the thing your gut says, the thing your spreadsheet says. You go back and forth for days and still feel no closer.
Here is a faster way. Give ChatGPT the decision, the options, and what matters to you, and ask it to lay out the tradeoffs in plain language. You still decide. It just stops the spinning.
The copy-paste template
Paste this into ChatGPT, then fill in the brackets:
Help me decide between these options. Be plain and direct, no hype.
Decision: [what you are deciding, e.g. raise my prices or keep them]
Option A: [first option, with the key numbers]
Option B: [second option, with the key numbers]
What matters most to me: [e.g. steady income, less stress, more free time]
My biggest worry: [e.g. losing clients, looking greedy]
For each option, give me:
1. The best case in one sentence
2. The worst case in one sentence
3. The one cost nobody talks about
4. Who this option is best for
Then tell me which option fits what matters most to me, and why, in two sentences. Then ask me the one question I have not answered yet.
That last line is the secret. Most decisions stall on one missing fact, not on a lack of opinions. The template forces that fact into the open.
A real example
Say you run a small service business and you are torn about raising prices:
Decision: raise my hourly rate from $60 to $75, or keep it at $60.
What matters most: steady income without burning out.
Biggest worry: losing regular clients.
ChatGPT will show you something like this. Raising prices risks losing two or three price-sensitive clients, but it buys back hours and usually keeps the clients who value the work. Staying put keeps everyone, but it locks in the same grind and the same ceiling. The cost nobody talks about with staying put is that you quietly resent the work by month six.
You already knew most of that. Seeing it laid out side by side is what breaks the tie.
Three decisions this works best on
Money moves. Raise prices, take the cheaper supplier, buy the tool or keep doing it by hand. Numbers make the tradeoffs honest.
Time moves. Hire help, drop a service, switch your schedule. The template surfaces the hidden cost, which is usually your evenings.
Yes or no moves. Take the client, join the program, start the side project. The best case and worst case lines stop the fantasy version where everything works out.
It works worst on decisions where you are missing real information, like a medical choice or a legal one. For those, talk to a professional, not a chatbot.
Why this beats asking for advice
Asking a friend gets you their bias. Asking a forum gets you twenty biases. Asking ChatGPT this way gets you a clean comparison you can argue with. You can say "you got the worst case wrong, here is the real number" and it rebuilds the comparison instantly. That back and forth is the whole point. The template is not a fortune teller. It is a whiteboard that talks back.
Try it, then keep the good ones
Save the decisions that turn out well. After a few months you will have a small library of how you actually decide things, which is worth more than any single answer.
