You Had a Great Idea This Morning. By Dinner, It Was Gone. Catch It in 30 Seconds.

You were driving, or cooking, or in the shower, and a really good idea showed up. A product. A post. A fix for something a customer keeps asking about.

You told yourself you would remember it. You did not write it down, because you were busy, and writing it down felt like stopping everything.

By dinner, it was gone. Not because it was a bad idea. Because it was caught at the wrong time, in the wrong place, with no next step attached.

Here is a 30 second fix. One place, four short lines, then back to what you were doing.

1. One place, always the same one (the only rule that matters)

Pick one place for ideas and stick to it. One phone note. One page in a notebook. One doc. It does not matter which one. What matters is that it is always the same one.

Ideas scattered across five apps are ideas lost with extra steps. If you catch one on paper, move it into your one place that same day.

2. The 30 second catch: four short lines

When an idea shows up, do not judge it, do not plan it, and do not open a new project for it. Just write four lines:

  • The idea, in one sentence.
  • What sparked it.
  • Who it is for.
  • One next step, if one is obvious. If none is obvious, write "none yet" and move on.

Worked example: a realtor hears the same three questions at every open house. She catches this in her one note:

  • Idea: "A printable checklist for first time home buyers."
  • Spark: "A buyer asked the same three questions at the open house."
  • For: "First time buyers."
  • Next step: "Ask two buyers what they wish they had known."

Thirty seconds. Then she goes back to the open house. The idea is parked, not lost, and it is not nagging her all afternoon.

3. The 5 minute weekly review (Sunday works well)

Once a week, open your one place and do three things:

  • Read the week's catches once, fast. Do not edit them.
  • Pick one to move forward, or pick none. Picking none is a fine week. Most ideas are fine to keep parked.
  • For the one you picked, write its very next step and when you will do it. Not a plan, just a step. "Draft the checklist Tuesday morning" beats "launch a product line."

Everything else stays parked. A parked idea is not a failed idea. It is an idea waiting for its week.

What this does not do

This does not turn an idea into a product, write your outline, or price anything. Turning messy notes into a product outline is a different job, and that is where the building starts. This one only catches ideas and keeps them findable, so the building step has something real to work with later.

It also does not fix having too many ideas. If your list grows every week and nothing ever moves, the fix is not a better list. Pick one, do its first step, and let the rest wait. A short list you use beats a long list you admire.
