A manual can contain individually good illustrations and still feel unreliable. The product is rounded in one panel and square in the next. Arrows switch color halfway through. Some callouts have circles, others have boxes. The reader may not name the problem, but the visual drift makes every new panel harder to decode.
Consistency is not decoration. It reduces the number of visual rules the reader must learn.
Write a visual specification before producing the full set
A compact specification should define:
- the approved product revision and reference-image set;
- primary and secondary viewpoints;
- perspective or projection style;
- main, secondary, and detail stroke hierarchy;
- active-part and existing-part treatment;
- arrow shape, color, and usage;
- callout, leader line, and detail-circle style;
- correct/incorrect and warning treatment;
- background, margins, and panel ratio;
- allowed text, symbols, and accent colors;
- master and delivery file formats.
One page is often enough. The purpose is to make decisions once rather than improvising them in every panel.
Approve an anchor figure
Create one representative figure containing the product, an action arrow, a callout, a small detail, and an installed state. Review its geometry and style carefully. This becomes the anchor against which the remaining figures are compared.
Do not begin with twenty independent prompts. Start from the approved base view and create controlled variants.
Change one variable at a time
When a new panel is needed, identify exactly what changes:
- the cover moves upward;
- the filter is removed;
- the cable routes through one clip;
- one warning zone is highlighted;
- the final state becomes visible.
Everything else should remain invariant: product proportions, control location, camera family, line hierarchy, arrow style, and background. This “change only the action” rule is one of the strongest defenses against visual drift.
Separate product identity from illustration style
Maintain two reusable references:
- Product identity reference: shape, parts, materials, ports, and revision-specific details.
- Style reference: strokes, arrow language, colors, callouts, detail circles, and panel composition.
This separation allows the same documentation style to be applied to a new product without accidentally copying the old product's geometry.
Review the set as a contact sheet
Individual review finds local errors. A contact sheet finds system errors. Place every figure on one page and look for:
- changing product width or height;
- drifting viewpoint and scale;
- inconsistent line weight;
- arrows with different heads or meanings;
- changing accent colors;
- callouts that jump in size;
- duplicated or missing controls;
- panels that contain much more detail than their neighbors.
Review again at the final publication size. Consistency that exists only at 200% zoom will not help the reader.
Preserve versions and source relationships
Name files by product revision, figure number, and version. Keep the approved anchor, source references, editable master, and delivery copy connected. When the product changes, update affected figures from the latest approved version instead of regenerating the whole manual without constraints.
