New Contractor Leads in New York: 1,153 Registrations from the NYS Contractor Registry

New York doesn't have a statewide license for general contractors. Licensing is local: NYC, Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester each run their own. But every contractor bidding on public work in New York State must register with the Department of Labor's Contractor Registry, and that registry is open data. If you sell to commercial contractors, it is the best statewide new-contractor list there is.

Window: certificates issued Sep 21 to Oct 19, 2026. Source: the NYS DOL Contractor Registry on data.ny.gov. Filter: business entities only, with no sole proprietors.

1,153 new registrations in about a month

Business type Registrations
Corporation 837
LLC 302
LLP 12
Partnership 2

Where they are based

Business state Registrations
NY 995
NJ 65
PA 20
CT 16
MA 10
OH 6
Business city Registrations
Brooklyn 41
Rochester 36
New York 31
Staten Island 28
Syracuse 21
Bronx 14
Albany 14
Buffalo 12
Farmingdale 12
Ronkonkoma 11

The registrations are spread out, and no single city dominates. By ZIP prefix, Long Island (117xx) leads with 130, ahead of Westchester (105xx, 52) and Brooklyn (112xx, 40). About 14% are out-of-state firms, mostly from New Jersey, registering to bid on New York public work.

The compliance flags are the interesting part

The registry also records each contractor's compliance history:

Flag Registrations
Has workers' comp insurance 1129
MWBE-owned (self-reported) 219
Associated with an apprenticeship program 304
Safety-standard violation on record 46
Labor/tax-law violation on record 17
Outstanding wage assessments 3

That makes the list useful beyond sales:

  • Primes can vet subs before a prevailing-wage job. A violation flag is worth a phone call.
  • MWBE-owned firms (219) are a ready list for primes chasing participation goals.
  • Apprenticeship-associated firms (304) matter on projects with apprenticeship requirements.

How to pull it

Skip the officers column (personal names) and filter out individuals. Some rows are typed as a corporation but carry a person's name, so check for an entity marker too.

Or use the packaged version, the New York Contractor Registry Scraper. It applies the business-only filter, cleans cities and phones, and adds MWBE, clean-record and ZIP filters.
