Google X-Ray Search for Smarter Job Hunting

I know job searching, especially when you are starting a tech career, can be frustrating regardless of the position you are targeting, whether it is Software Engineering, Data Science, Data Analysis, Data Engineering, Cybersecurity, or any other tech role.

Most people rely on LinkedIn and a few common job boards, but there is another simple method you can try: Google X-Ray Search.

Google X-Ray Search is a technique where you use Google's advanced search operators to search specific websites for particular information.

Instead of searching Data Analyst jobs Kenya , you can give Google much more specific instructions.

For example, if you are looking for junior data roles in Kenya, search:

("Data Analyst" OR "Data Engineer" OR "BI Analyst" OR "Analytics Engineer")
("Junior" OR "Entry Level" OR "Graduate" OR "Associate")
("Kenya" OR "Nairobi")

Do Not Just Find the Job — Research the Company.

Once you find an interesting role, do not rush to click Apply.

Take a few minutes to understand the company and the role first.

Ask yourself:

  1. What does the company actually do?
  2. Which industry does it operate in?
  3. Which skills are mentioned repeatedly in the job description?
  4. Which of your projects can prove that you have those skills?

Finding the vacancy is only the first step.

Your application should show the employer that you understand their problem and that you have the skills, projects, or experience to help solve it.

Final Thoughts

Learning SQL, Python, Excel, Power BI, Data Engineering, Machine Learning, or Software Engineering is important.

But having technical skills alone is not enough. You also need to learn how to find opportunities, research companies, position your skills, and apply intentionally.

Do not just send the same CV to 100 companies and hope one responds.

Search better, understand the role, tailor your application, and make it easy for the recruiter to see why you are a good fit.
