If you build websites for small businesses in India, the question that decides your pipeline is simple: where are the businesses that still don't have one? I pulled the numbers from 73,568 Google Maps business listings across 24 Indian cities and 26 categories. The short answer: 41% have no website of their own, and the gap is widest in tier-2 cities and in trades and shops.
Key findings
- 30,281 of 73,568 listings (41.2%) have no website. A Facebook page or a directory listing does not count as a website here.
- 92.7% have a phone number, so the businesses without a site are still reachable.
- Tier-2 cities lead the gap. Kota (64.7%), Kanpur (61.5%), Patna (57.7%) and Bhopal (57.7%) are far ahead of Bangalore (26.5%), Mumbai (28.7%) and Delhi (29.6%).
- Trades and shops lead by category. Hardware stores (71.9%), pet businesses (54.1%), restaurants (53.5%), contractors (52.1%) and garages (50.6%) are the least online.
- Professional and travel businesses are mostly online already. Only 13% of logistics firms and 14.8% of travel agencies lack a site.
Where the data comes from
The numbers come from the public business database pages on Mantis, which I work on. Each page lists businesses found on Google Maps by category and city, and states how many have a phone number and how many have a website that is really theirs. I read the 509 India city pages (updated between 23 October and 5 November 2026) and added up the counts.
Two caveats before the tables:
- These are listings per category page. A business can appear in more than one category, so treat the totals as listings, not unique businesses.
- A listing without a website is a signal, not a guarantee of need. Some owners are happy with WhatsApp and walk-in trade. Check before you pitch.
The gap by city
| City | Listings | With website | No website |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kota | 2,685 | 948 | 64.7% |
| Kanpur | 1,907 | 734 | 61.5% |
| Patna | 1,984 | 840 | 57.7% |
| Bhopal | 1,656 | 701 | 57.7% |
| Nagpur | 1,714 | 772 | 55.0% |
| Rajkot | 1,328 | 608 | 54.2% |
| Vadodara | 1,954 | 901 | 53.9% |
| Faridabad | 3,200 | 1,558 | 51.3% |
| Surat | 3,433 | 1,824 | 46.9% |
| Chandigarh | 2,941 | 1,593 | 45.8% |
| Indore | 3,251 | 1,816 | 44.1% |
| Coimbatore | 3,277 | 1,923 | 41.3% |
| Jaipur | 3,555 | 2,120 | 40.4% |
| Lucknow | 3,347 | 2,005 | 40.1% |
| Ahmedabad | 3,678 | 2,290 | 37.7% |
| Gurgaon | 5,318 | 3,321 | 37.6% |
| Kolkata | 3,516 | 2,265 | 35.6% |
| Hyderabad | 3,534 | 2,312 | 34.6% |
| Chennai | 3,625 | 2,386 | 34.2% |
| Pune | 3,626 | 2,404 | 33.7% |
| Noida | 3,497 | 2,405 | 31.2% |
| Delhi | 3,307 | 2,327 | 29.6% |
| Mumbai | 3,668 | 2,614 | 28.7% |
| Bangalore | 3,567 | 2,620 | 26.5% |
The pattern is clear: in eight cities, more than half of the listings have no website, and every one of them is outside the big metros. If you live in or near one of them, you can meet owners in person and pitch in their language, which a remote freelancer can't.

What this means if you build websites
1. Pick a tier-2 city and a trade, not a metro and a profession.
Four out of five dental clinics in this data already have a site, so a dentist in Bangalore is a crowded pitch. Seven out of ten hardware stores don't. The hardware store database is the single biggest gap in this data.
2. Sell outcomes the owner already understands.
Shops and trades don't buy "a website". They buy more calls, more WhatsApp enquiries and fewer "are you open?" questions. Lead with a one-page site that shows stock or services, timings, a map pin and a WhatsApp button.
3. In metros, sell upgrades, not first sites.
Where most businesses already have a site (travel, logistics, clinics), the pitch is a redesign, booking, tracking or speed, not a first website.
4. Check each business before you pitch.
A missing website on Google Maps can mean the owner hasn't linked it. Search the business name first, then call.

FAQ
What counts as "no website"?
The listing has no website of the business's own. A Facebook page, an Instagram profile or a directory listing (Justdial, IndiaMART and similar) does not count.
Why are the totals called listings, not businesses?
The data is summed across category pages. A business that is both a clinic and a dental clinic, for example, can be counted twice. The percentages are still a fair picture of each category and city.
When was the data collected?
The source pages were updated between 23 October and 5 November 2026. I read them on 5 November 2026.
Can I reuse these numbers?
Yes. Please link back to this post or to the Mantis list pages as the source.
