Securing the unpatchable in an age of AI-driven vulnerabilities

Advances in AI are accelerating the discovery of vulnerabilities, particularly in Operational Technology (OT) systems that are often unpatchable due to legacy software or strict certification requirements. Historical incidents like the WannaCry worm highlight the severe risks associated with end-of-life systems and the dangers of relying on 'security by obscurity' or hoping for the best.

To mitigate these risks without direct patching, organizations should implement compensatory controls including network visibility, micro-segmentation, and Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW). By utilizing Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) for virtual patching and maintaining strict network boundaries, defenders can effectively shield vulnerable assets from exploitation even when the underlying software remains flawed.
