🚀 Why I Migrated My Spring Boot Projects to NestJS

Spring Boot vs. NestJS comparison

Spring Boot is powerful, mature, and battle-tested. But is it always the most efficient choice for modern, containerized applications?

After working with Spring Boot and Java, I started looking at the bigger picture - not just code quality or framework features, but also RAM consumption, CPU usage, Docker image size, startup time, Kubernetes scaling, and operational costs.

Here's why I decided to move some of my projects to NestJS + Node.js:

🔴 The Spring Boot side

  • JVM overhead and higher baseline memory consumption
  • Larger Docker images due to the JDK/JRE and application dependencies
  • More resources to allocate and manage in containerized environments
  • Additional complexity when optimizing deployments and scaling workloads

🟢 The NestJS side

  • A lighter runtime without the JVM
  • Smaller container images with a lean, multi-stage Docker build
  • Fast startup and a productive TypeScript development experience
  • A modular architecture that feels natural for modern API development
  • A great fit for Angular, React, and Vue.js applications

🐳 And what about Docker, Kubernetes, and Nginx?

For full-stack applications, I like the simplicity of serving the frontend through Nginx while running NestJS as the API backend. This gives me a clean separation of concerns, efficient static asset delivery, and a straightforward deployment architecture.
The real benefit isn't just choosing a different framework. It's optimizing the entire stack - from development to production infrastructure.

Of course, Spring Boot remains an excellent choice, especially for mature enterprise systems and workloads that benefit from the Java ecosystem. And NestJS isn't automatically faster or cheaper in every scenario. Actual resource usage depends on the workload, dependencies, configuration, and deployment strategy.

My takeaway: Choose the right tool for the workload, measure the real costs, and don't overlook infrastructure efficiency.

What has your experience been with Spring Boot vs. NestJS in Docker and Kubernetes? Have you measured the difference in production?
