Choosing the Right Payment Gateway for Nigeria: Why We Ditched PayPal for Crypto

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

Our platform, meant to democratize freelance work in Nigeria and beyond, faced a critical challenge: most popular payment gateways were either unavailable or unaffordable in these countries. For instance, PayPal, which was our first choice, had a 3.5% + 35ยข charge for local transactions in Nigeria, making it unviable for our users. We knew we had to find a solution that was both reliable and cost-effective.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

We tried integrating PayPal as our primary payment gateway. We thought it was a no-brainer given its widespread adoption. However, our users were hit with a 3.5% + 35ยข charge for local transactions in Nigeria. This was unacceptable, and our users began to abandon ship. We were losing them to traditional payment methods that were not only costly but also inefficient.

The Architecture Decision

After weeks of research and experimentation, we decided to pivot to cryptocurrency as our primary payment gateway. We opted for Bitcoin, which has a lower transaction fee compared to traditional payment methods. This decision was not taken lightly, as it required significant architectural changes to our system. We had to design a wallet system that could handle cryptocurrency transactions securely and efficiently. Our engineers worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless experience for our users.

What The Numbers Said After

The numbers told a compelling story. With cryptocurrency, our transaction fees plummeted to 1%, a significant reduction compared to PayPal. Moreover, our users were able to receive payments in a more timely manner, with our payment processing time decreasing by 40%. Our platform's adoption rate also increased by 25% as users were able to take advantage of lower fees and faster payment processing.

What I Would Do Differently

In retrospect, I would have done more research on the regulatory requirements for cryptocurrency in Nigeria before making the switch. While the fees were significantly lower, the regulatory landscape is still evolving, and we had to navigate some unexpected challenges. Nonetheless, our decision to pivot to cryptocurrency was the right one, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It's not always easy to choose the right payment gateway, but for Nigeria and other countries like it, cryptocurrency has proven to be a game-changer.
