I Moved to Cyprus as a Remote Developer. Here's What I Pay in Taxes

If you're a remote developer earning from outside your country of residence, your tax setup probably isn't optimized. Most developers default to whatever system their home country offers - often 30-45% effective rates - without realizing there are fully legal alternatives within the EU.

My partner and I relocated to Cyprus in early 2025. We're both remote workers billing a US-based company. Here's what we learned.

Why Cyprus?

Cyprus is an EU member state with a tax framework specifically designed to attract foreign professionals:

  • 0% tax on dividends for Non-Dom residents (only 2.65% health contribution)
  • 15% corporate tax - among the lowest in the EU
  • 60-day rule - you only need to spend 60 days per year in Cyprus to qualify as a tax resident (instead of the usual 183 days)
  • No inheritance tax, no wealth tax

The effective tax rate for a properly structured remote setup can be as low as 5-8% on total revenue.

The Setup (For Developers)

The typical structure for a remote dev:

  1. Form a Cyprus Ltd (~2,100 EUR, takes 2-3 weeks)
  2. Invoice your clients through the company
  3. Pay yourself a small salary (taxed at normal rates)
  4. Take the rest as dividends (0% income tax as Non-Dom)
  5. Deduct real business expenses (equipment, software, coworking, travel)

Annual company maintenance costs around 3,000 EUR (accountant, VAT returns, tax filings).

The 60-Day Rule

This is the part that surprises most people. Cyprus offers tax residency with just 60 days of physical presence per year, as long as you:

  • Don't spend more than 183 days in any other single country
  • Have a permanent residence in Cyprus (rental counts)
  • Have a Cyprus-based business or employment

This means you can travel most of the year and still be a Cyprus tax resident.

Non-Dom Status

"Non-Domiciled" status is available to anyone who wasn't born in Cyprus and hasn't been a resident for 17+ of the last 20 years. It lasts for 17 years and exempts you from:

  • Special Defence Contribution (SDC) on dividends, interest, and rental income
  • This is where the 0% dividend tax comes from

What It Actually Costs to Get Started

Real numbers from our experience:

  • Company formation: ~2,100 EUR
  • Tax residency setup (immigration, yellow slip, tax number, Non-Dom application, health insurance): ~2,200 EUR
  • Annual maintenance (accountant, VAT, tax returns): ~3,000 EUR/year
  • Rent in Larnaca (1-bed apartment): 600-800 EUR/month

Is It Worth It?

If you're earning 80K+ EUR/year as a remote developer and currently paying 30%+ in taxes, the math is straightforward. The setup costs pay for themselves within the first few months.
